In late 1989 the company purchased the first of a number of farms near Komatipoort in response to the announcement of a decision to build a new sugar mill in the area. The viability of agricultural enterprise in the Nkomazi area had been significantly improved with the initiation of the Komati River Basin Development Project, jointly undertaken by the governments of Swaziland and South Africa, which included the building of the Maguga and Driekoppies (Lake Matsamo) dams.
Over the years the Crookes Brothers farms were developed with the construction of reservoirs, the installation of modem irrigation schemes and the planting of sugar cane and bananas.
Further farms were purchased between 1997 and 2004 and the estate, close to 5 000 hectares in total extent, today farms almost 2 000 hectares of sugar cane and 450 hectares of bananas.
The annual crop of approximately 230 000 tons of sugar cane is crushed at the nearby TSB mill and a large proportion of the 20 000 ton annual banana crop is marketed and sold under the Lebombo brand name. |
