The farms comprising this estate are situated in the picturesque Vyeboom area between the towns of Grabouw and Villiersdorp. Views are dominated by the magnificent Hottentots Holland Mountains and expanses of deciduous fruit orchards. Nearby is the Theewaterskloof Dam, the largest dam in the region and the main source of water to Cape Town, some 150 km to the west.
Crookes Brothers Limited purchased the Ouwerf Farm in November 1991 and immediately set about removing older orchards and replanting them with trees bearing varieties of apples more in demand in Europe.
In 1995 and 1997 three smaller farms were acquired to increase the total area of the estate to 370 hectares, 170 hectares of that being cultivated. An additional two farms have since been purchased in 2007 and 2008 respectively. This increases the total area of the estate to 910 hectares, 431 hectares of that being cultivated. Apples dominate in that 77% of the area is planted with various varieties of that crop with the remaining 23% being pear trees.
The apples and pears are packed at Two-A-Day pack house in Grabouw and the majority of the fruit is marketed and sold by Tru-Cape, most of it exported |
