In the mid-1980's Crookes Brothers Limited made the decision to diversify its agricultural activities by acquiring farms in the most productive grain producing region in the Western Cape. The first purchase, finalized in January 1987, was a 1400 hectare farm situated in the Overberg area in a section of the area known as the Goue Rif (Golden Reef). The farm Quarrie produce barley, wheat and oats and also ran a relatively large flock of Merino sheep.
Over the next 15 years neighboring farms were purchased and the full area of over 4 500 hectares farmed as a single entity.
The current crop mix includes wheat, barley and canola (rape) with a total of approximately 2 000 hectares being planted annually to these crops. Revenue is also generated from the sale of wool and mutton from a flock of 10 000 sheep. |
